Keywords with 0 visits in Google Analytics? What’s Up with That?

Ever looked at your Google Analytics Keyword Reports and wondered about those keywords showing up with 0 visits?

Bear in mind that a session or visit lasts until the visitor closes the browser or remains inactive for 30 minutes.

So for example, if a visitor searched for the keyword “marketing” and clicked through to www.nyumarketing.com, the keyword as well as the visit will be recorded. Now imagine a scenario where a visitor did not find the information he or she was looking for and hit the back button (to go back to Google.com) or typed Google.com in the address bar, and then searched for “nyu marketing” to come back to www.nyumarketing.com.

In this case, the visit or session remains the same as initiated by the first search query (because the browser wasn’t closed and the second search query was performed within 30 minutes of the first one) so a new visit is not recorded but the search query “nyu marketing” is captured with a “0″ under the visits column.

So when analyzing long-tail keywords, make sure not to ignore your keywords with “0″ visits because all these queries were also used by visitors to find your website.
