What is unique about the NYU M.S. in Integrated Marketing program?

In addition to our curriculum of 14 marketing-focused courses, our faculty of senior marketers is unique. Because they have senior-level marketing experience at major companies, they are able to teach our students how to apply what is needed in the real world of contemporary business: theory, methodology, and best practices. By learning from marketers who have launched new products, developed brand strategy for leading consumer and business-to-business products, managed campaigns, optimized search, launched e-commerce businesses for major brands, managed P&Ls, and developed social-media campaigns for leading companies, MSIM students have the advantage of real-world learning.

How does the M.S. in Integrated Marketing differ from an MBA degree?

The NYU M.S. in Integrated Marketing degree is a specialized graduate degree. Instead of the general-management courses that students take in an MBA program, students in the NYU M.S. in Integrated Marketing program take an all-marketing curriculum. They begin with 9 core courses in general marketing, then each student selects a concentration area and takes 4 courses in that specialization-- brand, digital, or analytics. To complete the degree, all students take the Capstone course where they apply the learning from all of the previous courses to the writing of a business plan for a new company.

    Is there a thesis project?

Because the program’s focus is hands-on, real-world learning, the thesis project—called the Capstone—is a business plan. Students complete the program by taking the Capstone course, where each creates a new business concept and writes a complete business
plan for launch. That way, students apply all of the learning from all courses, and they also learn entrepreneurship.

    What are the admissions requirements?

The Admissions Committee reviews all elements of the application as part of the review process, so it is important that you take the time and consideration required to complete all the components of the application. Why does the program require that applicants have relevant work experience?

The NYU M.S. in Integrated Marketing program, and the previous program, the M.S. in Direct and Interactive Marketing, have historically been graduate programs for marketing professionals to enhance their career development. Students benefit from being able to exchange ideas, challenges, and experiences with classmates during work on group projects, case-study assignments, and in class discussions.

For the Entering Class each Fall, the MSIM program accepts applications from U.S. "rising seniors" who have relevant undergraduate course work. These new college graduates are able to build their experience immediately through internships in their first semester (in contrast to international students, who must be in compliance with the student-visas restrictions on off-campus employment). In addition some of these rising seniors find full-time entry-level marketing positions at New York City companies as soon as they begin the program. Relevant work experience after college/university is essential for all other applicants to the NYU M.S. in Integrated Marketing program. U.S. students tend to be junior- and mid-level professionals in marketing and related fields. They have an average of 3 years of relevant work experience, and some have 7-9 years of experience.

All international students must have a minimum of 1 year of full-time work experience in marketing after graduation from college or university. This group, which comprises 30% of students, brings experience from global, multi-national, and local advertising agencies, consumer-goods companies, management consultancies, digital marketing companies, database companies, and financial-services companies. At present, MSIM international students are from Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, England, Greece, India, Israel, Mexico, Pakistan, Peru, the Philippines, Spain, Taiwan, Turkey, Uruguay, and Venezuela.

Can I apply if I already have a graduate degree?

Yes, it is not uncommon for NYU MSIM students to have a previous advanced degree. Approximately 10% of the students have previous MBA and other M.S. degrees.

In some cases, they come to the NYU MSIM because they did not get an opportunity to take enough marketing courses to feel confident about career advancement. In other cases, they consider their graduate degrees to be out of date--for example, they did not study digital marketing or learn the best practices of measurable marketing.

    • Introduction to Integrated Marketing
    • Using Excel for Marketing Analysis

Can I work while attending the graduate program?

The program is designed to be flexible, meeting the needs of students who are working full time as well as those who are not working. Students are able to switch from full-time study to part-time study--or from part-time study to full-time study--in any semester, without any bureaucracy. All classes are held on weekday evenings. That enables working students to come to class at the end of their work day; it also enables full-time students to work at internships during the day in the Fall, Spring, and Summer semesters, if they are eligible to do so. For international students attending any graduate program in the U.S., eligibility to do an internship depends upon the terms of the visa.

Approximately 60% of NYU MSIM students work full time. They take classes on a part-time basis, usually two courses per semester. This means that they attend school two evenings each week. The full-time students take four courses per semester, attending school four evenings per week. If a group of full-time students wishes to move through the core courses in a "block unit," they can choose to do so.

What are the placement opportunities for graduates?

Since 60% of the students work full time while attending the graduate program, and some have tuition-reimbursement benefits from their employers, not every new graduate is seeking a new position. Some students, however, look for new opportunities while they are enrolled in the program, and others benefit from hearing about new opportunities while they are enrolled.

For those who have applied for new positions to begin at graduation, the rate of employment has been historically high. For the graduates of our previous degree program, the M.S. in Direct and Interactive Marketing, employment in the 90% range was standard. Since the downturn in the U.S. economy, candidates have faced a more challenging and slow job market. Companies contact us on a year-round basis, seeking our students and our alumni.

Recent employment includes: Razorfish (Strategist), Converseon (Affiliate Marketing Manager), American Express (Senior Marketing Manager), Web MD (Director of Integrated Marketing), CheetahMail/Experian (Client Relationship Manager), Discovery Channel (Manager of Integrated Marketing), Avon (Assistant Product Manager), Ogilvy (2: Account Management; Senior Analyst).

Recently promoted alumni positions include: Carat (Communications Planning Director), Sirius XM (Manager of Digital Communications), Alberto Colver (Global Marketing Manager), Digitas (Associate Director)
